There is a multitude of different devices in the market that use this form of “Air Bearing”. Primarily it consists of a diaphragm that is securely held in place by a screw ring on the outer perifery. In most cases the OEM disposable device is disguarded and replaced with the HOVER equivalent and from then on the repair is using the Polyurithane diaphragm only which dramatically reduces cost and inconvenience as this component ships in a small envelope with little or no fanfare by Fedex and often is recieved overnight ex works.

Air casters (air bearings or air skates) are the ideal alternative to a traditional wheel when it comes to moving heavy, large and sensitive objects. The transport principle of an air caster system is similar to the movement of a hovercraft. You can simply place the air casters underneath an object to make it hover. There is no floor damage and because the friction is so low, you can move objects with only 1/1.000 of the force. The capacity per single air caster ranges from 100 to 40.000 kg’s. Main advantages are: Safe Loads are lifted from underneath so there is no risk of heavy objects falling down. There are no harmful exhaust gasses, just air. Budget friendly Air Casters are almost wear free. They cost a fraction of the purchase price of alternative transport methods. Simple You just need compressed air and a suitable floor. Internal transportation of fragile or heavy loads can be risky and time-consuming. Air casters can help you to ease this job. Air caster transport enables you to easily move the equipment in a safe, simple and fast way. Simply place the air casters underneath the object you’d like to transport, connect it to your air supply system and start moving! Air casters are the core elements in an air caster system. This is the pneumatic lifting and hovering part. It consists of a metal backplate with a bladder / torus that is either made from polyurethane plastic or neoprene rubber. Both materials have their own advantages. Plastic is almost wear free, but has less capacity. Neoprene can generate a higher lift and has almost twice the capacity.

This Torus Bag type Aircaster was developed by the aircraft industry as a viable interpretation of the origional BHC design discussed in the houses of Parliment in the UK during the late fifties and post World War II. It featured in a patent found in Google Patents used in a platform called the flyaload hover platform and later a range on individual casters called BHC Hoverpads were produced and offered to the materials handling industry.

Diaphragm type air casters are low lift, cost and low pressure and used primarily in turntables and line devices that have a controlled surface to glide over. Their origins came from the BHC Hoverpad made in the UK and then licenced to a large automotive Corporation that found the technology hard to work with and subsequently some Mid West Companies took the technology on to engineer solutions that are used today.
